Kaminario's K2 all Flash SSD array is an ideal solution to pair with SAS business intelligence and advanced analytical software. SAS products have the ability to ingest huge amounts of raw data, (customer, performance, financial, etc.) and produce meaningful and actionable information that customers across all verticals can use to make crucial business decisions. Due to the amount of raw data required to generate SAS reports, I/O very often becomes the bottleneck, necessitating the need for high performance storage to support these critical applications.
Recently SAS, in conjunction with Dell and Kaminario, tested a Kaminario K2 all SSD storage array with SAS Foundation Suite running on a Dell PowerEdge 910 server with 32 cores. The test simulated a mixed analytical workload under varying loads. The mixed analytical workload scenario was chosen because it places an emphasis on I/O which is used extensively during typical SAS Foundation program execution.
The test used both SAS datasets and text files with ROW counts up to 90 million. During the tests, the Kaminario K2 was able to achieve sustained throughput in excess of 4GB per second with over 5.5 GB per second of throughput at its peak. SAS recommends that a storage subsystem be able to sustain at least 50MB per second per CPU core. During the tests, the K2 storage array achieved a sustained output in excess of 100MB per second per CPU core, an increase of over 2x. The K2 eliminated the I/O bottleneck seen when using traditional, HDD based storage arrays resulting in a dramatic drop in actual wall clock time.
